The Revs. Judy Welles and Duane Fickeisen were the first settled ministers of the Unitarian Universalists of the Cumberland Valley, and were the first UU ministers I had the privilege of serving under as music director. Duane was a master gardener, so when the couple retired I wrote this piece for the choir to sing at their final service with us. Charts included for piano/conductor, choir, and optional instruments (bass, cello, clarinet, flute, recorder, and violin).
Lyrics
You walked the land to find a plot to call your own:
not too wet, not too dry.
This patch was rough and thistle-downed and overgrown,
but your heart said to try.
So you stayed, and you toiled,
pulling weeds, turning soil,
in the hope we would grow.
Through summer sun and autumn wind and winter snow,
you have tended this land.
And every bud, and every stalk to earth returned
felt the touch of your hand,
for you cared, and you fed,
and you prayed, and you led,
and your love helped us grow.
The seasons roll, ordained, and August comes to end
so September can start.
But every bloom that in this soil you’ve worked finds home
holds your love in its heart.
For this rich, fertile land
owes its life to your hand.
From this soil, we will grow.
